Step 16
Now we need to merge the two layers. Click the little black triangle on the right hand side of the layers panel and from the drop down menu that appears choose ‘Merge visible’. You can also rename the layer to shield by double clicking the name in the layers panel.

Step 17
Now we are going to create a highlight. Make a new layer by clicking on the ‘New layer’ icon. Hold down the SHIFT key and hit ‘M’ a few times to cycle through the different selection tools. Stop when you get to the Elliptical tool. Drag it out like in the image below and then hit ‘D’ on the keyboard to reset the foreground and background colors to black and white.

Step 18
Hold down the Alt key and hit the backspace key to fill with white, then CRTL + D to get rid of the selection. You can now add some blur by going Filter>Blur>Gaussian blur. I used a value of 20 here.
